Macon-Bibb Citizen Advocacy

One relationship can make a lasting difference.

Community connections · Macon-Bibb County · Edition eleven

Macon Bibb Citizen Advocacy promotes the protection of and advocacy for people with developmental disabilities. It helps build personal connections between community members and people who may face exclusion, with each relationship shaped around the person’s interests and circumstances.

Three ways to start

  1. Understand the relationship. A citizen advocate is unpaid and independent of human services, standing alongside another person and representing their interests.
  2. Start a conversation. Contact the organization to discuss the role, the commitment, and how its coordinators orient and support advocates.
  3. Open another door. Invite the organization to speak to your workplace, civic group, faith community, or friends. You can also ask about committee service or financial support.

Good to know

A personal commitment.

An advocate and their partner help decide the direction of their relationship. There is no single role that fits everyone. Begin by learning about citizen advocacy and discussing what involvement could look like with the organization.
